Friday’s transitional stage saw a long breakaway from Fabio Roscioli (Jazztel), who attacked just after the start and gained almost 10 minutes on the peloton, with Simone Masciarelli (Cantina Tollo) and Ludovic Martin (Crédit Agricole) in pursuit. With about 40km remaining, Masciarelli and Martin caught and passed Roscioli, but shortly after all the escapees were reeled in, setting up Van Heeswijk’s sprint win at the end of the day.
