The daughter of the 29-year-old Bianchi team leader and his girlfriend Gaby Weis had been due on July 14, right in the middle of the Tour de France.
But Weis went into labor early Monday morning. More than 24 hours later, doctors opted to deliver Sarah Maria Ullrich via caesarian.
“I’m the most fortunate man in the world!” the 1997 Tour winner announced on his website. “I am so happy that I could be there for her birth… I am dancing on clouds right now. This is something I will never forget.”
Weis and her new daughter are both doing well, but are expected to remain in the Freiburger Uni-Klinik for a week. Ullrich, meanwhile heads to Paris on Wednesday and begins his assault on the Tour on Saturday.
“Sarah’s birth has given me even more motivation,” Ullrich declared. “I can now start the Tour with a load off my mind.”
Hutchinson misses hour mark
Michael Hutchinson failed Wednesday in his bid to improve the world hour record set by former Olympic pursuit champion Chris Boardman three years ago.

Hutchinson, 29, who represented Northern Ireland at last year’s Commonwealth Games, abandoned his attempt at Manchester Velodrome after gradually slipping back on his schedule.
Hutchinson was 18 seconds down on Boardman’s mark after the first 10 kilometers and the national road time trial champion slipped more than a minute off Boardman’s pace after 30 kilometers before pulling off the track after 40 minutes having covered 32.5km.
Hutchinson is expected to make another attempt on Boardman’s record later in the year.
