Snow has interrupted the 104th running of Milano-Sanremo, forcing a six-man break and the peloton to board team buses for the leg from Ovada to Cogoleto, leaving 126km to race.

Organizers deemed the snowy 532-meter Turchino climb, north of Genoa, too dangerous to race. Also removed from the route was the descent of Le Manie, likewise a decision made “for the safety of the riders,” according to a statement from the race directors.

What ordinarily is the longest one-day race of the pro calendar has been trimmed by nearly 53km, from 298km to 245km.

The break — Lars Bak (Lotto Belisol), Pablo Lastras (Movistar), Matteo Montaguti Ag2r La Mondiale), Maxim Belkov (Katusha), Filippo Fortin (Bardiani Valvole-CSF Inox) and Diego Rosa (Androni Giocattoli) — was to resume racing with the 7:10 advantage it held when the race was halted.

Editor’s note: Stay tuned for more from Milano-Sanremo.
