Bas van Dooren announced his retirement Thursday, soon after learning that he had been suspended for a year after testing positive for erythropoietin. According to an Associated Press report, Van Dooren, who won World Cup races in 1999 and 2000, admitted he used EPO to prepare himself for the world championships in September.
“I needed a great result to extend my career,” he told the Dutch newspaper AD.

Once his “B-Sample” came back positive, Van Dooren was informed that he would be suspended for the entire season next year and fined $1400 Euros.
“They’ll never see me again in mountain biking,” he said.
