Who can blame Guido Trenti? We all pick and go to races we have a good chance of winning.This is just another example of how USA Cycling let down U.S. cyclists.

As an outsider (writing from Canada), it looks like the cycling gods of USA have to pick who can perform, but also must pick who is willing to show up! So many great pros in cycling believe they have risen ‘above’ the national team and the worlds. Where are the elite cyclists on the roster?Vacationing in Spain, par chance?Sorta like hockey: who wants to volunteer for a world championship when you’re paid to play?Michael DeKelver

I always thought cyclists in the U.S. were reasonably educated and open-minded. After all, we’re all participating in a sport which has its base in another continent. However, it seems that there are just as many flag waving nationalistic folk as there are at the monster truck rally (no offense if you’re into monster trucks, of course).The rule is, you race for the country of your nationality. Guido Trenti has a US passport. Get over it. If you’re really mad take the issue up with the U.S. State Department and its passport agency. Let’s not forget most of our ancestors imposed themselves upon North America in the first place.But if this doesn’t satisfy you, let’s look at some World Cup (soccer, that is) teams this year. Japan, one of the hosts, granted a passport to Brazilian Alessandro Santos just a few months before the event, and he played. France, one of the strongest teams in the world, contains three stars who were born in former French colonies. The star forward for Poland was born in Nigeria. The list goes on. So you see, it’s a sport! The future of international politics or national pride does not depend upon an athlete’s birthplace.But feel free to keep writing these letters against the selection of Mr.Trenti; they’re pretty funny.
