A horrific crash while descending Flagstaff mountain in Boulder left Phil Zajicek with a severed arm, a head injury, and multiple fractures to his face, ribs, and femur. The former professional has been in a medically induced coma since his arrival in the intensive care unit, and friends and family are raising money to help cover his immediate family’s medical expenses.

The GoFundMe page has been active for only one day, but so far, family and friends have raised more than $26,000 (as of Tuesday afternoon). Their stated goal is $300,000.

“My wife and I are of course stunned by this misfortune but equally stunned by the support, thoughts, prayers, vibes, karma for our son. He truly loved the ‘team’ aspect of professional road cycling and when he recovers he will truly be blown away and eternally amazed but humbled by the outpouring of support,” Zajicek’s father wrote on the GoFundMe page.
