Just when it looked as though healing was coming to the scarred relationship between the grand tour organizers and the Union Cycliste Internationale, the wounds just opened again. After the recent Giro d’Italia and April’s Paris-Roubaix were successfully run under UCI regulations as part of the international body’s Historical Calendar, it seemed that the upcoming Tour de France might be similarly promoted.

Three American track riders are locked and loaded for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, and five spots are still up for grabs. Californian Sarah Hammer, Coloradan Taylor Phinney and Washington’s Jennie Reed all own spots for Beijing based on their 2008 results. USA Cycling will hold a talent camp June 15-16 at the ADT Events Center in Carson, California, to decide the final spots for the games.

It’s been half a year since Mike Janelle died in his sleep of sudden heart failure at his home in Vail, Colorado. A favorite in the mountain and endurance road cycling communities, Janelle was known just as well for his wide smile and large personality as his tenacious racing style. He was a member of three winning Race Across America teams and recorded a plethora of victories in Rocky Mountain-region mountain bike races. Just 40, Janelle passed away five months before the birth of his son, Mike Jr., who was born on April 7.

The Adventures for the Cure (AFC) cycling team has entered the four-man relay category for the world’s longest bicycle race, the Race Across America, known simply as “RAAM.” This race has been called the world’s toughest bicycle race, covering over 3,000 miles from Oceanside, CA to Annapolis, MD. The route is 1,000 miles longer than the 2008 Tour de France, and contains more than 100,000 feet of climbing. The race begins on June 11, 2008, in Oceanside, and ends on approximately June 18th in Annapolis.
