Langkawi organizers make changes to ’08 route

Just two weeks after announcing plans for an unusual twist for the 13th edition of the Tour de Langkawi, the organizing committee of the early season Malaysian stage race has issued a revised route more in keeping with the traditions of the event. On December 18, the committee released a route that included a stage 2 race to the hors catergorie Genting Highlands, a move that critics said would have decided the race too early.

Again, we received a nice selection of photos and, again, it was tough to choose a winner, but we went with the image with a terrific seasonal message, one we can all endorse: Ken M’s “Santa left me a bike trail under the tree.” It’s a nice shot, but more importantly, Ken, we all know what to ask for next Christmas!

Heras retires

Three-time Vuelta a España winner Roberto Heras, whose two-year suspension for doping ended in October, confirmed Saturday that he has decided to quit professional cycling. "I've thrown in the towel, there's no going back," Heras, 33, told the Spanish sports daily Marca.

Leukemans formally dismissed from Lotto

Having been on suspension since testing positive for testosterone in September, Bjorn Leukemans was officially fired from Predictor-Lotto on Wednesday when his B sample confirmed the initial result. Leukemans tested positive for an elevated level of testosterone in a sample provided four days prior to the world championships in Stuttgart. He finished 13th in that race, but was suspended when his team received notice of the test a few days later. After delays, the 30-year-old Belgian's B sample result was returned on Wednesday.

Matzbacher killed in Austria

Austrian pro Andreas Matzbacher died in a Christmas Eve auto accident, his Volksbank team announced late Tuesday. According to police, the 25-year-old Matzbache lost control of his car and crashed into a pillar supporting an overhead signpost near his home in the southern Austrian community of Graz. Matzbacher pronounced dead at the scene. "At the age of 25, 'Matzi' was torn out of this life far too early on Christmas Eve and leaves a deep hole in our midst," Team Volksbank said in a statement.

We kept flicking back-and-forth between several images, but finally settled on Jeff Sakacsi's shot of the U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclocross in Portland. Maybe it's because we like well-composed black-and-white images, or maybe it's just because this one seems to tell a good story about what was a very mucky day. Either way, congratulations Jeff. Nice job.

‘Passport’ program on track says UCI

The Union Cycliste Internationale is facing a logistical race against the clock to implement the new “biological passport” in time for the 2008 season. The passport is an individual electronic record for each rider, in which the results of all doping tests over a period of time are collated. It will also contain results of individual urine and blood tests aimed principally at measuring blood and steroid parameters.
