L’Equipe: Mayo B sample positive

The French national anti-doping laboratory at Châtenay-Malabry has confirmed the positive doping test for Spanish rider Iban Mayo, the daily sports newspaper l'Equipe reported on Wednesday. Mayo, of the Saunier Duval team, was originally cleared by the Spanish cycling federation (RFEC) for the same offense. The Spanish cycling federation in October cleared Mayo, who tested positive for blood-booster EPO during the 2007 Tour de France, claiming his second sample was negative. However cycling's world governing body the UCI said at the time the second sample needed to be reanalysed.

French doping agency extends Landis ban to non-UCI events

American Floyd Landis, stripped of his 2006 Tour de France title for doping, was on Wednesday banned from all competitions in France by the country's anti-doping agency AFLD. Landis tested positive for testosterone on July 20 last year and was suspended from competition for two years by a three-member panel organized by the North American Arbitration Association in September. Landis has appealed the ban, which expires on January 29, 2009, to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport.

A break with tradition: Organizers unveil new route for Langkawi

Organizers released details of the 2008 Tour de Langkawi on Monday, with the riders facing the formidable hors categorie stage to the Genting Highlands on the second day of the race. The Malaysian state of Johor is expected to play a major role in the 13th edition of the Tour de Langkawi when the southern state hosts three of the nine stages in a revamped route for the race scheduled for February 9-17. The route takes a significant departure from past editions, with the stage to Genting now longer and appearing earlier than it ever has before.

CONI prosecutor recommends life ban for Marzoli

The chief counsel of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) has asked the organization’s disciplinary committee to impose a life-time suspension for former Tinkoff rider Ruggero Marzoli. The 31-year-old Marzoli was named in the ongoing "Oil for drugs," scandal. The panel’s attorney noted that the rider had already served a four-month suspension for doping in 1999 and should, therefore, be banned from sport for life, in keeping with the World Anti-Doping Code.
