How do you choose a North American Female Cyclist of the Year in a season when Kristin Armstrong, Sarah Hammer and Jill Kintner all won world championships? The answer is, we didn’t. Instead, VeloNews chose to honor all three for their remarkable accomplishments and brought them together in November for a photo shoot. During a few hours together on a warm, sunny day in Dana Point, California, the women discussed, among other things, cycling’s most fashionable accessory: the rainbow jersey. Armstrong, the world time-trial champ, and Hammer, the world individual pursuit champion, rode together

One of Southern California’s largest mountain-biking festivals, the eighth-annual Firestone Santa Ynez Valley Mountain-Bike Classic will be held April 27-29, 2007. The event, which features downhill, cross-country and an endurance cross-country race, is sponsored by Platinum Performance nutrition and is held at the Firestone Vinyard outside of Buelton, California. 2006 VeloNews Awards: North American Female Cyclists of the Year
Eki in da house
Yeah, we know. This was a strange year to select some of the winners of the VeloNews Awards, and no category produced a more debatable outcome than top North American man. We chose Floyd Landis, the embattled former Phonak rider who stands accused of cheating his way to victory at the Tour de France. Here’s why. It’s not about whether we believe Landis is guilty or innocent. Whatever the outcome of the yet-to-be-resolved charges that Landis used testosterone on stage 17 of the Tour, he outperformed his fellow Americans, including George Hincapie and Levi Leipheimer, throughout the rest of

London (AP) - Justin Gatlin and Floyd Landis made headlines for their sporting achievements in 2006. They were bigger news when they were caught in the year's biggest doping scandals. Gatlin, who equaled the world record in the 100 meters, and Landis, who won the Tour de France, had positive tests for testosterone revealed within 48 hours of each other at the end of July. The Americans were the tip of an expanding range of collared takers of banned drugs. For the first time, a professional darts player, Britain's Robbie Green (marijuana) tested positive. There was also Australian
Despite the extensive gap in his 2007 racing calendar, Ivan Dominguez left no doubt during this year’s Wells Fargo Twilight Criterium in Boise, Idaho, that the 31-year-old Cuban has returned to form. Dominguez flew out of the final corner of the course, lined with 25,000 spectators, after a textbook leadout from Toyota-United teammate Caleb Manion. It was his second NRC-level victory and his first win in this year’s USA CRITS Series after having been sidelined from racing following a crash during May’s Tri-Peaks Challenge. Dominguez says he’s finally feeling like his old self again. “I was

These days, the alleged humorist Patrick O’Grady is generally confined to soiling the virtual sandbox here at VeloNews.com, where subscriptions are not at risk. His "contribution" to VeloNews the magazine normally consists of an editorial cartoon so severely downsized over the years that its mostly masters-age, easily enraged audience can’t read it without an electron microscope. Gonzales draws 2-year suspensionFormer Vuelta a España winner Aitor Gonzalez was suspended for two years Friday on doping-related offenses after the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld an appeal by the UCI. Spaniard Gonzalez, the 2002 winner, tested positive for methyltestosterone during the Vuelta last year and during an earlier out-of-competition test in August 2005. The Spanish cycling federation decided only to fine him in May after he presented a research report saying that a food supplement he had been taking had been contaminated. However, the CAS said in a statement that Gonzalez

Swiss cycling chief Lorenz Schlaefli said Thursday that he was likely to halt anti-doping proceedings against former Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich next month unless new evidence comes through. Schlaefli said he was not able to use existing evidence received from the legal probe into the Operación Puerto doping ring in Spain because the Spanish investigating magistrate had forwarded it on condition that it was not used officially. "Since these documents cannot be used, there's no sense in continuing this process. With these documents, officially we cannot do anything," the director
VeloNews has made some controversial choices in its 19th annual awards issue. The magazine’s 2006 International Cyclist of the Year is Spanish revelation Alejandro Valverde, the overall champion of the UCI ProTour, while the top North American awards go to embattled Tour de France champion Floyd Landis and the three U.S. women who won world championships in 2006: Kristin Armstrong (road time trial), Sarah Hammer (track pursuit) and Jill Kintner (mountain bike four-cross). “No category produced a more debatable outcome than top North American man,” said VeloNews editor Kip Mikler. “Whatever

Iraq's Olympic cycling coach was killed after gunmen kidnapped him from his home in the latest attack on one of the nation's sports figures, officials said. Family members identified the body of 48-year-old Mahoud Ahmed Fulayih at the central morgue in the capital on Monday, two days after he was abducted, said Hussein al-Amidi, the acting secretary general of Iraq's National Olympic Committee. He said Fulayih was kidnapped three days after he returned with the cycling team from the Asian Games in Doha, Qatar. The team did not win any medals there. “We lost another one. He is

It’s over. The USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships are all wrapped up and the 2006 season is in the books. I finished without any spills, frozen fingers and unplanned trips to the ambulance to fight the onset of hypothermia. Embattled Tour de France winner Floyd Landis will compete in a 100-mile mountain-bike race in Colorado. The international sporting world's top appeals court on Wednesday rejected the UCI's bid to overturn a decision by the Spanish cycling federation to acquit rider Iñigo Landaluze on a doping charge. The Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) said in a statement that it rejected the UCI's appeal in the Landaluze case, which involved flaws in the dope testing procedure carried out by the internationally-accredited French laboratory at Châtenay-Malabry. The Euskaltel cyclist was found to have high testosterone levels in tests made during the 2005 Dauphine Libéré stage race which he

For a little pre-Christmas change of pace, I thought I’d share with you some new technology I’ve been using in a different context that I think could be a great tool for studying efficiency of movement in cycling and triathlon. From December 6-10, I was at Tamarack, a beautiful ski resort near McCall, Idaho for a technique-intensive masters cross-country ski retreat. Three-time Olympian and eight-time masters world champion Jon Engen, a Norwegian transplant to Sun Valley, Idaho, led the camp. JoAnn Hanowski, who has won more ski marathons than any other American, and Jim Fredericks, former
Katie Compton once again asserted herself as the top dog in the world of domestic cyclo-cross racing by easily grabbing the elite women’s title at the 2006 California Giant Berry Farms USA Cycling national cyclo-cross championships. As she has done all season, Compton didn’t necessarily attack the women’s field — she simply turned on the afterburners and said bye bye. After the race, Compton likened her performance to a joyride, focusing most of her comments on how fun the course was.
The 2006 California Giant Berry USA Cycling national cyclo-cross championships attraced a record number of ’crossers from around the nation to race on the grass of Roger Williams Park in downtown Providence, Rhode Island, proving yet again that in the United States, cyclo-cross is a participant sport first, and a fan-based sport second. The Astana team of Vuelta a España winner Alexandre Vinokourov was granted a reprieve on Tuesday as the UCI announced the squad’s holding company, Zeus Sàrl, had submitted a required set of documents and was issued a four-year ProTour license. The team, which emerged from the remnants of the collapsed Liberty Seguros program, had initially been denied its license application after the UCI determined that its application didn't fulfill all of the UCI's required conditions for a ProTour license. But instead of rejecting the application outright, the UCI extended the team’s deadline in

Talking with Colorado-based Irishman Alan McCormack at the recent Coors Classic reunion, it was as if the stage in which he had a brush with death was only yesterday instead of 18 years ago. McCormack, who raced for the Killian’s Red team, recalled his fall on the final turn of the 1988 Reno Criterium where he was shooting for the stage win with Davis Phinney and Steve Bauer. “I was out the saddle, sprinting through the corner, when my Campag gear got stuck between cogs,” he said in his still broad Irish brogue. “Someone stole my helmet right before the start, and I landed on my head, got a
