U.S. track and field athletes test positive for THG
Four U.S. track and field athletes have had their back-up B test samples confirmed as positive for the new designer steroid THG, a spokesman for the sport's governing body said on Wednesday. The International Association for Athletics Federations confirmed that the samples taken from the athletes matched initial A samples which were made known last month. The four, who have yet to be named officially, are entitled to an appeals hearing before the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency prior to a possible two-year ban. The samples were taken in June at the U.S. Track and Field Championships at Stanford

Brown scores in SF: Horgan-Kobelski, Barnholt tops in Boulder ‘cross
Northern California cross fans were greeted to a great day of 'cross racing Sunday at the third round of the Bay Area Super Prestige Series. Cyclo-cross powerhouses Travis Brown, Todd Wells, Marc Gullickson, Jackson Stewart and Andy Jacques-Maynes all wore each other down trading for the lead. For most of the race, Brown made concerted efforts to get to that front group and was repeatedly forced to close gaps. With four laps to go, Brown caught the lead group of Gully, Wells and Maynes and attacked in a technical uphill section. The group was back together a lap later and with two laps

Technical Q&A with Lennard Zinn: How many bolts?
Dear Lennard;I wonder if you could share your opinion on the compatibility of carbonfiber handlebars with some of the current four-bolt designed handlebarstems that have a split faceplate.Without naming brands, I've been getting feedback from a representativeof one of the handlebar companies that the four-bolt/split-faceplate designcould create an unsafe (his word was "scary") connection with carbon fiberhandlebars and might even cause breakage. The problem is, this opinionis just that - an opinion - and I’m not hearing this same concernfrom anyone else.Because a handlebar breakage could be

Stover and Trebon double-up in Verge series
The second day of the Vergegear.com Mid-Atlantic Cyclo-Cross Championship Seriesdouble-header moved to Marysville, Pennsylvania for the Harrisburg City Islanders’ Rockville Bridge ‘Cross Classic. For the second day in a row, the Gearworks/Spin Arts duo of Marianne Stover and Anna Milkowski overpowered the Elite Women’s field to claim their second one-two finish of the weekend. As she did in the previous day’s Saturn Classic, Stover established a sizeable gap on the first lap and hammered on to extend that lead out to approximately one minute over teammate Milkowski. Mountain bike national champion Max Plaxton (Gears Racing) won the junior men's competition, while Kris Sneddon (Kona) took the Under-23 men's title. 2004 Giro route unveiled
The route of the 87th Giro d’Italia was announced Saturday, with organizers promising a more demanding opening week and a shorter, tougher finish than in this year’s edition. A nearly all-Italian event comprising a prologue and 20 stages, with one start and finish in Croatia, the 2004 Giro will cover 3435 kilometers, with 12 flat stages, four rolling and three in the high mountains. Organizers concede that Italy’s grand tour will be “slightly biased towards climbers,” with only a single time trial; there were two races against the clock in both 2003 and ‘02. The longer stages will come
Trebon, Stover claim Saturn Classic ‘cross
After weeks of racing in unseasonably mild conditions, riders were finally greeted by cold, windy cyclo-cross weather as they arrived in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, for the Saturn Classic, the first day of a double-header weekend in the Vergegear.com Mid-Atlantic Cyclo-Cross Championship Series. The elite races started with a long road prologue that enabled Marianne Stover (Gearworks-Spin Arts) to establish a small gap by the time the women hit the pits for the first time. Sarah Uhl (Saturn) sat in second, a small gap between her and the rest of the field. While Stover and Uhl worried about
Simoni challenges Armstrong to Giro-Tour duel
Italy's Gilberto Simoni, winner of the Giro d'Italia in 2001 and 2003, has challenged five-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong to a Giro-Tour duel in 2004. Armstrong always focuses his season on the Tour in July. He has never ridden the Giro, which is raced in May. But at the official presentation of the 2004 Giro route on Saturday, Simoni called on the American to ride both races. "If Armstrong rode both the Giro d'Italia and then the Tour de France, we'd see how good he really is, for better or worse," Simoni said. "He has said he wants to ride the Giro at least once during his

Facing disaster, a decision: What to save?
A funny thing happened last week - my house almost burned down. Well, to be perfectly honest, the Jamestown fire that started last Wednesday morning burned to within about five miles of my house in the Boulder foothills. Other than worrying about losing everything I own, and possibly getting burned alive in the box canyon that encloses my place, the experience was quite enlightening. I say “enlightening” because the unpleasant situation afforded me less than an hour to evaluate all my stuff and decide what to cram into the back of my little Volkswagen. The feed zone: Nutrition Q&A with Monique Ryan – carbs before exercise
Dear Monique:I recently read an article by a physiologist that indicated that consuming food in the hour before a workout was detrimental to performance. The author claimed that the insulin released in the blood as a result of eating would tend to make an athlete sluggish and discouraged. She also indicated it would cause a lower fat burn. Ultimately she recommends eating no earlier than two hours before a workout. Although I cannot speak to the science, it seems counterintuitive to me, especially for an endurance athlete. What do you think?SS Dear SS:Many endurance athletes strive to keep
Racers suspected of doping, Belgian daily reports
A number of bicycle racers who had undergone blood and urine tests at the beginning of September as part of an inquiry into hormone trafficking were found to be doping, the Belgian daily newspaper De Morgen reported Wednesday in Brussels. According to Morgen, which quotes judicial sources, some of the cyclists allegedly took Aranesp, a sophisticated doping agent comparable with EPO. The prosecutor’s office in Courtrai, which is in charge of an investigation focusing in particular on soigneur Herman Versele, who is close to the Belgian champion Johan Museeuw, declined comment. Legally speaking with Bob Mionske: Sue or settle?
Dear Bob,Last week, I was riding on a local greenway trail, with a daughter in a bike trailer. The trail crossed a street at a crosswalk with a signal light. I pushed the button, waited for the light to change, and started across. A driver talking on a cell phone didn't see the red light until too late, slammed on his brakes, and bumped me over. He must have called 911, because a police car and ambulance showed up a few minutes later. My daughter wasn't hurt and I just skinned my elbow and knee. He got a ticket. But the jerk never apologized, never checked on me or my daughter, or even got
THG on banned list, say WADA, IOC
The newly discovered designer steroid tetrahydrogestrinone (THG), the focus of a doping scandal in world sport, is on the list of prohibited substances, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Wednesday. The Olympic and professional sports world was shocked last month when the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency reported that a new undetectable steroid – THG – had been created that allowed athletes to pass doping tests. "Following the recent developments regarding the anabolic steroid tetrahydrogestrinone (THG), the International Olympic Committee and the

Apparently started as a signal fire by a lost hunter near the town of Julian, the so-called Cedar fire drew no immediate response, as most local fire crews were already fighting large fires near San Bernadino. Driven by Santa Ana winds of 50-60 mph, the blaze moved rapidly west, reaching the Ramona area northeast of San Diego early in the morning of October 26. When your spouse, child, friend or even rival is struck and injured by a car, recovery of damages may be crucial to that person's ability to meet medical bills. "No

How about urging all cyclists to wear helmets?Editor:In a recent column, Bob Mionske wrote: "I would urge cycling advocates to try to add no-blame clauses to their state bicycle helmet laws." How about urging cycling advocates to advocate that all cyclists, regardless of whether there are helmet laws or not, wear a helmet when they ride?
