RAAM Updated: Solo racers enter the second half
EL DORADO, Kans. (VN) — All but one of the top ten solo males were beyond the half-way point of the 2011 Race Across America on Monday morning. This second half of RAAM has a distinctly different flavor than the first. For many, the attitude for the first half is one of “charge!” or “full speed ahead,” but by that halfway point (7 miles east of Pratt, Kansas) for some the mantra becomes “survival” or “What was I thinking?”
Leipheimer climbs into top 20 on UCI rankings with Swiss win
The stage race riders continued to climb the UCI WorldTour rankings after the Tour de Suisse, with overall winner Levi Leipheimer (RadioShack) and second placed Damiano Cunego (Lampre-ISD) both now in the top twenty.

Fire forces Fitchburg-Longsjo cancellation for 2011
The longest running National Racing Calendar event, the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic, will not run this year. Organizers cancelled the race Monday morning due to road closures resulting from a large fire in downtown Fitchburg, Massachusetts.

Lapater takes Big Apple glory with Harlem Skyscraper win
John Eustice was looking for a track racing spectacle in Harlem when he changed the format of the 38th Harlem Skyscraper Classic. He got it Sunday when German Leif Lapater (Transporation Alternatives-Rockstar) topped U.S. Olympian Bobby Lea (Pure Energy) and Anibal Borrajo (Jamis-Sutter Home) in the two event omnium at Marcus Garvey Park in New York City.

Basso: Contador can do the Giro-Tour double
Ivan Basso has placed the entire focus of his season on returning to the Tour de France podium, this time on the top step in Paris. To do so, Liquigas-Cannondale’s two-time podium finisher will of course have to contend with the man he says is the only rider in the sport capable of the Giro d’Italia-Tour de France double.

Jesse Anthony victorious in 2011 Nature Valley Grand Prix as Rory Sutherland takes finale
Rory Sutherland stamped his name on Chilkoot Hill for the second year in a row, winning the final stage of the Nature Valley Grand Prix Sunday. Yellow jersey Jesse Anthony (Kelly Benefit Strategies-OptumHealth) closed on a solo Sutherland (UnitedHealthcare) on the 20-percent finish climb to roll in for second and secure the final overall classification.

On the third day of the 2011 Race Across America race leader Christoph Strasser and chaser Marko Baloh were both on record pace, with Strasser’s overall average speed being 18.31 mph and Baloh holding 17.29 mph.

Förster wins second stage, widens Nature Valley lead
Robert Förster won his second stage in a row at the Nature Valley Grand Prix Friday night, padding to his overall lead in the six-stage race. Förster (UnitedHealthcare) came out of the final corner on the front of the race and kicked along the left barriers for the win in the Uptown Minneapolis Criterium.
Nature Valley women’s stage stopped, Armstrong, Olds among the crashed
Race officials neutralized and canceled the fourth stage of the women’s Nature Valley Grand Prix on the final lap after a large crash at the start/finish line took down a number of riders. Overall leader Kristin Armstrong (Peanut Butter & Co.-Twenty12) and defending champion Shelley Olds (Diadora-Pasta Zara) were among the crashed riders heading into the bell lap in the Uptown Minneapolis Criterium.
