Mannion leads American riders at Tour de l’Avenir
The 22-year-old is fifth overall with three stages left in the eight-day race through France

Gavin Mannion is leading the USA Cycling contingent at the Tour de l’Avenir, an eight-day race through France for riders 23 years old or younger.
The 22-year-old Mannion placed sixth in Wednesday’s 106-kilometer fourth stage from Albertville to Saint-François-Longchamp and now sits in fifth overall, 1:42 behind race leader Ruben Fernandez of Spain. Mannion’s teammate Taylor Eisenhart, 19, is 14th overall at 3:06 back.
Mannion finished the opening prologue 21 seconds adrift, and has since stayed with the main pack to keep himself high in the GC standings.
Fernandez won stage 4 ahead of Patrick Konrad (Austria) and Adam Yates (Great Britain).
Riders compete on national teams at the race, which is part of the UCI U23 Nations Cup for the younger athletes in the peloton.
The race resumes Thursday with the 79km stage 5 from Saint-Gervais-les-Bains to Morzine.
