RCS sport cancels Roma Maxima, names Strade Bianche teams

MILAN — RCS Sport, the organizer of the Giro d’Italia and other major Italian races, announced Friday that Roma Maxima would not take place in 2015.
A press release cited “organizational problems,” which led to the event being “frozen.”
Formerly Giro del Lazio, the race was reborn in 2013. The Giro del Lazio has been around since the days of Benito Mussolini in 1933. The name changed a few times along the way, using GP Roma for two years and Roma Maxima in 2013 and 2014. In 1957, it even ran as a 116-kilometer time trial.
The 2015 event was set to be part of the UCI’s second-tier Europe Tour, but now vacates its March 8 spot on the calendar.
In the same release, RCS Sport also announced the 18 teams invited to race the ninth edition of Strade Bianche on March 7. The race starts in San Gimignano and finishes in Piazza Il Campo in Siena after racing across the white gravel roads of Tuscany.
