Julian David Arredondo (Nippo) mastered the second Category HC climb in two days at the Tour de Langkawi on Monday, earning the stage 5 win and taking the overall lead.
The punishing summit finish in the Genting Highlands of Malaysia featured an average gradient of nine percent over the last five kilometers. Arredondo crossed the line 26 seconds ahead of Pieter Weening (Orica-GreenEdge) and 44 ticks faster than Victor Nino Corredor (RTS Racing).
Arredondo takes a 1:22 GC lead over Weening into Tuesday’s stage 6. Sergio Pardilla (MTN-Qhubeka) is 2:10 back in third.
Arredondo is the third rider to lead the race — Theo Bos (Blanco) led after the first two stages and Wang Meiyin (Hengxiang) was in front after stages 3 and 4.
Stage 6 is a hilly route measuring 217.5 kilometers. The peloton will navigate up three Cat. 4 climbs and contest three intermediate sprints. The race ends Saturday.
