Chad Haga and newly crowned U.S. criterium champion Alison Powers opened their Illinois accounts with stage 1 time trial wins at the Alexian Brothers Tour of Elk Grove on Friday night.

Registering a time of 8:31, Haga (Optum) topped former national criterium champion John Murphy (UnitedHealthcare) by 0.83 seconds in the 4.5-mile opener. Ryan Anderson (Optum) was third, at four seconds, in Elk Grove, Illinois.

Haga pulled on the leader’s jersey in the three-day UCI stage race.

In the women’s National Racing Calendar event, the top of the prologue results sheet looked similar to last weekend’s criterium championship, with Powers (NOW-Novartis for MS) topping second-place Amanda Miller (Tibco-To the Top). Winning the opening-stage TT for the second straight year, Powers stopped the clock at 9:19, nine seconds better than Miller. Shelley Olds (Tibco) was third, at 13 seconds.

The Tour of Elk Grove continues Saturday with a 155-kilometer stage 2 road race for men. The women’s race continues with a stage 2 criterium.
