Climbers will be licking their chops and marking their calendars for Rwanda 2025 after the UCI unveiled the courses for what could be the hardest road world championships of the century.
“With multiple climbs and high altitudes, Kigali’s terrain will push competitors to new limits,” organizers promised Thursday in their route reveal package for next year’s worlds.
The elite women’s peloton will endure 3,350m of climbing through 165km of Rwanda’s “land of a thousand hills.”
One day later, the elite men will face an eye-watering 5,475m of vertical in their 268km road race. That’s about 150 meters more vertical than the famous “climbing worlds” in Colombia in 1995.
On paper, the routes that will make this weekend’s 2024 championships in Zürich look like a warmup.
The raw stats on the 2025 Rwanda courses suggest they will be far crueler than Innsbruck’s calf-snapping edition of 2018. The numbers make Rwanda a touch tougher than even the horror show served up at the Colombia-based championships in Duitama 1995.
Only the peloton’s most durable climbers will survive Kigali’s sinuous circuit race.
Mathieu van der Poel, Wout van Aert, and Lotte Kopecky will have cringed at what they saw Thursday when the UCI released Kigali’s elevation charts.
Tadej Pogačar, Demi Vollering, and Remco Evenepoel will be booking their flights for Rwanda already.
Just to be clear, as it’s not clearly evident in the route and if it wasn’t hard enought, one of the climbs of the circuit it’s cobbled.#Kigali2025 #Rwanda2025 https://t.co/ejOq3y4ofa pic.twitter.com/GXal3akUCd

The time trials for 2025 road worlds look equally torturous.
The elite women will accumulate 460m climbing in a rugged 31.2km TT through Rwanda’s hills. The men race across four categorized climbs in their 40.6km time trial for a total of 680m gain.

‘A milestone for the development and globalization of our sport’
The Rwanda road worlds will be historic for reasons far beyond just its climbing totals.
Based out of the capital city of Kigali, the 2025 championships will be the first hosted on the African continent.
They will also see the debut of the long-awaited separate U23 women’s road race.
“Bringing the UCI road world championships to the African continent has been my vision for several years. Just one year from now, that vision becomes a reality,” UCI president David Lappartient said in a press statement.
“I am delighted that this historic event will take place in Rwanda, already known for the magnificent Tour du Rwanda. Kigali and the whole of the country have a rich cycling culture that will now be shared with the world,” Lappartient said. “I cannot wait to welcome the cycling family to what will be a milestone for the development and globalization of our sport.”
1,500m altitude, a cobbled climb, and a mid-race mountain

All 2025 road worlds routes will focus on a Kigali-based circuit.
Men will ride the loop nine times, complete an “extension circuit,” and then tackle the Kigali lap a final six times. The women will rattle straight through 11 laps.
Based at around 1,500m above sea level, the 15.1km circuit will put lungs to the test. The steep grades of Côte de Kigali and cobbled surface of Côte de Kimihurura will bring another type of hurt.
The men’s extension lap will bring even more uphill with its traverse of the Mur Kigali and the 6km-long Mont Kigali.
Fatigue resistance will be as crucial as climbing capacity in deciding who wins a men’s race that could stretch to beyond seven hours.
Time trialists will also need to pack their climbing legs for their flights to Kigali.
The rollercoaster profiles of both the men’s and women’s courses will put a nail into the hopes of pure specialists like Filippo Ganna or Marlen Reusser, and will tilt the odds toward versatile all-rounders.
