Karl Menzies, Anne Samplonius win stage 1 of 2011 Tour of Elk Grove

Karl Menzies (UnitedHealthcare) and Anne Samplonius (NOW-Novartis) won the kickoff to the Alexian Brothers Tour of Elk Grove in Illnois on Friday.

Karl Menzies (UnitedHealthcare) and Anne Samplonius (NOW-Novartis) won the kickoff to the Alexian Brothers Tour of Elk Grove in Illnois on Friday.

Menzies covered the 7.2km time trial course in 8:26, edging Tom Zirbel (Jamis-Sutter Home) by a whisker. Both men received the same official finishing time. Westley Gough (Joker Merida) took third at two seconds back.

Samplonius took a more decisive victory, finishing in 9:26, six seconds better than runner-up Janel Holcomb (Colavita-Forno d’Asolo) and 10 better than third-placed Erinne Willock (Tibco-To the Top).

Saturday’s stage 2 road race serves up a 155km road race for for men and a 50-minute criterium for women.
