Liquigas was on a roll on Tuesday as the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali got under way with a double-stage day in Riccione.

Francesco Chicchi won the 81.2km morning stage by out-sprinting Mattia Gavazzi (CSF) and Roberto Ferrari (De Rosa). Then he and his Liquigas mates won the afternoon’s 15.6km team time trial, beating De Rosa and Lampre.

The one-two punch put Chicchi into the leader’s jersey going into Wednesday’s stage 2, a 175.1km leg from San Lazzaro di Savena to Faenza.
