Sven Nys (Landbouwkrediet-Colnago) won his seventh Belgian cyclocross championship on Sunday in Oostmalle.
Nys soloed to victory just three seconds ahead of Klaas Vantornout (Sunweb-ProJob). Tom Meeusen (Telenet-Fidea) crossed third at five seconds back.
World champion Niels Albert (BKCP-Powerplus), who has never won a national title in the elite ranks, finished ninth at 1:38 and complained about being jostled by Nys’ supporters.
“One of them deliberately pushed me to the ground. This is outrageous, to lose this way, even if Sven deserved to win today,” said Albert.
Nys also found himself on the ground after a crash early on and had to battle his way to the front.
“But I never panicked. The experience, no doubt … My last two laps were perfect,” said Nys.
The winner said he was sorry about Albert’s misadventure.
“The fans were turned on, but this cannot happen,” he said.
