Zoe Bäckstedt more than delivered on the hype Monday with dominant victory in the U23 women’s UCI road world championships time trial.
The Brit was last down the ramp and gobbled through racers who started in front of her in Rwanda’s hilly 22.6km course.
The 20-year-old stopped the clock close to two minutes faster than the rest of the field to become first winner of the new standalone U23 TT format. The event made its long-awaited debut in Rwanda on Monday.
Viktória Chladoňová (Slovakia) and Federica Venturelli (Italy) rounded out the podium late-morning Monday in Kigali.
Ava Holmgren of Canada was best-placed North American in 10th.
The 20-year-old Bäckstedt pedaled into Monday’s race as six star favorite.
She’s been on a tear all season racing in the WorldTour with Canyon-SRAM and already counts three time trial wins and a first GC victory on her 2025 resume.
Bäckstedt adds her U23 TT rainbow jersey to a wardrobe already loaded with stripes. She already counts the junior time trial and two cyclocross world titles on her palmarès.
Bäckstedt won’t double back for the hill-packed road race later this week.
Next up? More U23 cyclocross domination.
