FOLSOM, California (VN) — Twenty16 – Ridebiker, paced by world time trial champions Kristin Armstrong and Chloe Dygert, powered to a six-second win Friday over Boels – Dolmans in the cool and overcast stage 2 of the Amgen Women’s Tour of California.

“We didn’t get any time checks until about 4km to go,” said Armstrong, who finished third in the opening stage. “We just had to give it everything we had and our team rode well together.” Armstrong added that her team arrived in Folsom three days before the event to train on the time trial course, and it paid off.

Megan Guarnier, the leader of the Boels squad, who claimed stage 1 in South Lake Tahoe, retained her race lead. The reigning U.S. national road champion leads Armstrong, who moved into second place, by 12 seconds. Evelyn Stevens, Guarnier’s teammate, is third overall, 22 seconds behind, with two of the four stages remaining.

Twenty16 – Ridebiker, the 16th of 18 teams to start the 20.3km course in four-minute intervals, rode strongly from the outset. Armstrong, who claimed the 2009 world ITT crown and Dygert, who captured the world junior ITT and road races last September in Richmond, Virginia, powered the six-rider squad to the best provisional intermediate time, 12 seconds faster than UnitedHealthcare. But Boels – Dolmans then shattered the halfway time by six seconds.

Paced by former world TT champion Linda Villumsen, Coryn Rivera, and Katie Hall, UnitedHealthcare posted the best time with four teams still on the course. A few minutes later, Twenty16 – Ridebiker crossed the line and then waited for the remaining two squads to finish.

“We went out there, and we did our best,” said Guarnier. “It was all you could ask for in this or any time trial. We’ve been talking it day by day. We’ll have a meeting and see what’s best. But I am proud. It’s a team, and I couldn’t have done a team time trial without them.”

Emma Johansson (Wiggle – High5), who began stage 2 in second place, fell to 10th position, trailing by 1:01 after her team placed seventh in the TTT, 58 seconds behind.

Rally, the 10th team on the course, crashed five minutes into its ride. The team finished last in the field, more than three minutes behind the 17th place squad. A Rally team spokesperson said riders touched wheels 7km into the TTT. The squad made time cut, but Canadian Kristi Lay will leave the race after hitting her head and injuring her back.

To ease logistical and budgetary demands on teams traveling internationally to the event, the women’s field used mass-start legal road bikes but some squads used TT helmets.
